How to Feed Artisan Raw: The Complete Feeding Guide (Portions, Prep & Storage)

How to Feed Artisan Raw: The Complete Feeding Guide

Feeding Artisan Raw takes about 60 seconds a day: count out the right number of pucks for your dog's weight, add warm water, wait a few minutes, and serve. This guide covers exactly how much to feed, how to prepare each meal, and how to store your food — the three questions we get most at the shop and at the dog park.

Artisan Raw is freeze-dried raw dog food made in Summerland, BC. Freeze-drying removes the water but keeps the raw nutrition, so every puck rehydrates back into a complete raw meal — no thawing, no mess, no freezer full of dog food.

How much Artisan Raw should I feed my dog?

Feed one puck per 10 lbs of body weight per day. Each puck equals 4 oz (a quarter pound) of raw food, which works out to the standard raw feeding guideline of about 2.5% of your dog's body weight daily.

DOG WEIGHT PUCKS PER DAY 5 LB BAG LASTS 25 LB BOX LASTS
10 lbs 1 puck 20 days 100 days
20 lbs 2 pucks 10 days 50 days
30 lbs 3 pucks ~7 days ~33 days
40 lbs 4 pucks 5 days 25 days
50 lbs 5 pucks 4 days 20 days
70 lbs 7 pucks ~3 days ~14 days
100 lbs 10 pucks 2 days 10 days

Every bag contains 20 pucks (5 lbs of raw food equivalent). The Value Vault box contains 100 pucks (25 lbs raw equivalent).

Should I adjust portions for my dog's age or activity level?

Yes. The chart above is the starting point for a typical adult dog. Adjust from there:

  • Puppies — we recommend starting puppies on our raw puppy starter rather than the freeze-dried formulas. Puppies can eat freeze-dried too, but if your puppy will be over 50 lbs as an adult, we don't recommend our adult formulas for them — stick with the puppy starter through their growth period.
  • Pregnant and nursing dogs need more — often 1.5 to 2 times the adult amount. Both our meals are formulated to AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, so pregnant and nursing dogs eat the same food, just more of it.
  • Very active or working dogs — add a puck and watch their condition.
  • Couch potatoes and seniors — you may drop back slightly.

The best gauge is your dog, not the chart. You should feel ribs easily under a light fat cover and see a visible waist from above. Adjust by half a puck at a time and give it two weeks.

Do I feed once or twice a day?

Either works. Most owners split the daily amount into two meals — a 50 lb dog gets 2–3 pucks in the morning and the rest at dinner. Puppies under six months do better with three smaller meals.

How do I prepare Artisan Raw?

Add warm water, wait a few minutes, serve. That's the whole routine:

  1. Count the pucks into your dog's bowl.
  2. Add warm (not boiling) water. 1/3 cup of water per puck
  3. Let it sit until the pucks have soaked up the water and softened back into raw food.
  4. Break it up with a fork if your dog likes it loose, and serve.

Some dogs happily crunch the pucks dry, like a treat. That's fine occasionally, but we recommend rehydrating meals — it restores the food to its natural raw state and keeps your dog well hydrated.

Can I feed Artisan Raw on the road?

That's exactly what it's built for. No cooler, no thawing schedule — pucks travel in the bag at room temperature. Camping, road trips, hiking: pack the pucks, borrow some water when you get there.

How do I store Artisan Raw?

Unopened, keep it in a sealed, airtight container in a cool, dry cupboard — no fridge or freezer needed. Freeze-drying is one of the oldest and best food preservation methods, and stored this way, Artisan Raw stays fresh for up to two years.

After opening, reseal the bag well and keep it away from heat and moisture. It's totally fine to leave a rehydrated meal out for your dog to graze on through the day — just keep an eye out, since food left out can attract the odd curious critter.

Which meal should my dog eat: Signature Complete or Hypoallergenic?

Both are complete and balanced to AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, and both feed exactly the same way — same pucks, same portions, same prep.

  • Signature Complete Meal is our multi-protein formula, led by beef (39%) with chicken, salmon, and egg. It's the right pick for most dogs. Note it contains chicken — if your dog has poultry sensitivities, go Hypoallergenic.
  • Hypoallergenic Meal is formulated without poultry or grains, with omega fatty acids for itchy skin and coat issues. Choose this one for dogs with known food sensitivities.

Frequently asked questions

How many pucks are in a bag of Artisan Raw?

20 pucks per 5 lb (raw equivalent) bag, 100 pucks per 25 lb Value Vault box. One puck equals 4 oz of raw food.

How much does it cost per day to feed Artisan Raw?

From the 5 lb Starter Pack, roughly $4.95–$5.00 per puck — about $5/day for a 10 lb dog or $25/day for a 50 lb dog. The 25 lb Value Vault brings that down to about $2.90–$3.00 per puck, roughly 40% less per meal.

Is Artisan Raw complete and balanced, or a topper?

It's a complete diet. Both formulas meet AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages — no supplements or mixing required.

Can puppies eat Artisan Raw?

Yes. All Life Stages formulation means it's suitable from puppyhood through senior years, and puppies eat more per pound of body weight and do better on three meals a day. That said, puppies can eat our freeze-dried, but we prefer they start on our raw puppy starter. We do not recommend our adult formulas for puppies that will be over 50 lbs as an adult.

Do I have to rehydrate the pucks?

We recommend it for meals — rehydrating returns the food to its natural raw state and adds hydration. Dry pucks make a great high-value treat.

Is freeze-dried really raw?

Yes. Freeze-drying removes water at low temperatures without cooking the food, so the nutrition of raw feeding stays intact. Add water and it's a raw meal again.
